The Junior Doctors Association of
Government Medical College Srinagar and its Various associated
Hospitals went on an Indefinite strike from 6th June 2005,
protesting against the discrimination in the Stipend of Post
graduates training in GMC Srinagar Associated and those in
SKIMS. According to a spokesman of JDA, the PG Students (Non PSC
Confirmed) of SKIMS are given a stipend of Rs.19,000 per month
where as those in Government Medical College Srinagar are paid a
paltry sum of Rs.8000 only. This is in spite of the fact the all
the post graduates are selected through a single COMMON
ENTRANCE TEST. The JDA GMC Srinagar is supported by JDA Jammu
which is also on strike in Jammu for the same reason. The strike
has the support of the various Employees union of Medical
College Srinagar as well as the Faculty Union of Jammu. The
spokesman also said that they had approached the authorities
(read MINISTERS) many times over the past 4 years apprising them of their demands but no
attention was paid by the government.
Meanwhile all routine work in the
various Associated Hospitals of GMC Srinagar (as well as GMC
Jammu) has been badly hit by the strike as the Junior Doctors
make the back bone of these hospitals. The Out patient
departments have been worst hit due to the strike and only the
Emergency work is being performed in the Hospitals. Most of the
wards are empty and the Patients have been referred to SKIMS and
other hospitals.
JDA President Dr. Nissar Ul Hassan
has asked the people to forgive the doctors for going on an
indefinite strike but they were left with no other option as
they have a family to feed too. He has asked the public to Put
pressure on the Government to accept the Genuine demands of the
Striking Doctors.
Meanwhile Doctors Association of
Kashmir, Resident Doctors Association SKIMS, Employees Joint
Action Committee J&K and other Employees Unions have expressed
their support for the Strike.
