Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (S.M.H.S) Hospital..


History

The S.M.H.S Hospital was established in 1948 at Karan Nagar in the heart of Srinagar city as a Government-owned General Hospital to provide patient care to needy patients. Primary and secondary medical care in the major specialties of Medicine , Surgery and Gynecology was made available to the general public on OPD and Inpatient basis.

In 1959, after the inauguration of Government Medical College on the same campus, S.M.H.S hospital became a major teaching institution imparting undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in all allied specialties of Medicine, Surgery and Gynecology.

In the 1970’s, as medical services became more specialized and differentiated, separate hospitals were established for specialties like Obstetrics and Gynecology and Orthopedics etc. The shifting of the concerned departments coincided with the expansion and differentiation of the major specialties of Medicine and Surgery.

 

Bed Strength

The Official bed strength of the Hospital is 250. However the actual Bed Strength of the Hospital at any given time is

 

Service provided to the Patients.

Currently patient care services are offered in the specialties of Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology, Radio diagnosis and Imaging, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology and Radiotherapy. Facilities also exist for the Super specialties of Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Urology, Cardiothoracic surgery and Pediatric surgery.

These are supported by well organized and fully equipped diagnostic, therapeutic and support service departments. There is a separate Laboratory services block which undertakes routine, specialized and super specialized investigations.

The hospital also has a well-established Blood Transfusion  department with modern facilities for the collection, storage and safe distribution of blood.

Out Patient Service
  • Out Patient Service is provided to the patients on all 6 days of the week except Sundays, free of cost.

  • Advanced Imaging services like MRI, CT scan, USG, X-ray, ECG, Doppler, Nerve Conduction tests, Endoscopies etc are all done on Out Patient basis at very subsidized rates.

  • Laboratory services is provided to patients on Out patient Basis at discounted rates.

In Patient Service
  • Provides admission to patients on all days. Admission are on an 24x7 basis in the respective departments and Units.

  • In patient service is provided free of cost to the patients.

  • Patients are provided with all the Medicines and IV fluids from the hospital completely free of cost. Nutritious meals are provided to the patients without any charge.

  • All investigations done in the Hospital like USGs, X-ray, ECG etc are done completely free of cost.

  • Poor patients are provided with even advanced investigations like CT without any charge.

  • Referred patients are Transported to the destination hospitals in Hospital Ambulances without any cost.

Emergency Patient Service
  • Emergency patient care is available on all days, 24 hours a day.

  • Emergency care remains open even on National Holidays, Sundays, during strikes etc.

  • Patients are provided with all the Medicines and IV fluids from the hospital completely free of cost.

  • All investigations done in the Hospital like USGs, X-ray, ECG etc are done completely free of cost.

  • Referred patients are Transported to the destination hospitals in Hospital Ambulances without any cost.
